Viola Davis’ ‘G20’ Movie: Release Date, Where to Watch & More

Viola Davis is always up for something new! As for her latest endeavor, the EGOT winner stars in the action movie G20, which will be released in April 2025. While promoting the film in March, Viola spoke with the Times of London and defended the project, which the publication described as an “ass-kicking American president in a preposterous hoot of an action movie.”

“I don’t think every movie you do has to be considered for an Academy Award,” Viola pointed out. “I wanted to do something that families could watch together, something popular.”

Viola then hinted that an actor doesn’t need a career filled with only dramatic, award-winning roles. “But internally, you’re always trying to get back to the fun,” she explained, adding that she “needed some levity in [her] life,” referring to her project lineup.

“The only two people you owe anything to are your 6-year-old self and your 80-year-old self,” the Fences actress said.

What Is the G20 Movie About?

G20‘s official logline reads, “After the G20 Summit is overtaken by terrorists, President Danielle Sutton must bring all her statecraft and military experience to defend her family and her fellow leaders.” Viola plays Danielle.

Since this is, after all, an action-packed movie, Viola joked in her Times of London interview that she “sometimes complained” about filming her fight scenes because she is a “woman of a certain age.” Nevertheless, the Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes star pointed out that she is not “not one of those women who is afraid to look muscular, and I don’t believe in losing a whole lot of weight so I can be magazine-ready — there’s still a part of me that wants to represent real life. I wanted to look capable, a leader who’s willing to jump through the plate glass first.”

As for the message of G20, Viola hopes it can connect with all audiences. However, the film is premiering months after former Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris lost the 2024 election to Republican Donald Trump. So, Viola acknowledged that, for some viewers, seeing a woman of color playing a U.S. president could “probably” stir up regret “in hindsight.” However, she pointed out that they “created this movie before [the 2024 election].”

“I do not think it’s a suspension of disbelief to imagine someone who looks like me as the president,” Viola told the publication. “If you get down to the nitty gritty, we just wanna reach people.”
