‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ Trailer: Barry Keoghan Gets Meta with The Weeknd in Suspense Thriller

The Weeknd is turning the camera inward for suspense thriller “Hurry Up Tomorrow.”

The “Idol” co-creator and lead star, AKA Abel Tesfaye, is reuniting with his team from the series for the feature, which will be released alongside his upcoming album of the same name January 24. Fans will have to wait a little longer for the film, though, which will be in theaters May 16.

The elusive logline reads: “A musician (Tesfaye) plagued by insomnia gets pulled into an odyssey with a stranger who begins to unravel his existence.”

Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan co-star alongside Tesfaye, who cowrote the film with his “Idol” co-writer Reza Fahim.

Trey Edward Shults, who previously helmed 2019 drama “Waves” and 2017 horror film “It Comes at Night,” is directing. Shults also cowrote the feature.

Tesfaye told Variety that he specifically wanted Shults to put his own spin on the script.

“I gave him [the script], and said, ‘I need you to see yourself in this film, that’s really the only way it’s going to work,'” Tesfaye said. “He did, and he brought in a whole new element that’s very personal to him as well.”

Tesfaye’s Manic Phase and Fahim are producing along with the late Kevin Turen and Harrison Kreiss. “Hurry Up Tomorrow” is executive produced by Ortega, Shults, Michael Rapino, Ryan Kroft, Wassim “Sal” Slaiby, and Harrison Huffman.

The feature is a personal project for Tesfaye; co-stars Ortega and Keoghan were collaborative improvisors on set as well.

“Jenna brought so much depth to the character,” Tesfaye told Variety of Ortega. “There was a scene where Trey and I looked at each other like, ‘On paper, this is just ridiculous — how is it going to translate on screen?’ And she said, ‘I have an idea.’ She led that whole scene — none of it was rehearsed, and a lot of my reactions in it are not acting.”

Tesfaye added that Keoghan was “always number one on my list for his role,” telling Variety, “What makes him different from Jenna is that his talent is so raw, it just comes so naturally to him.”

Tesfaye reflected that losing the use of his singing voice temporarily is in part what led him to make the film. He “knew that I really needed to sit the fuck down and figure out my life, to understand what happened, face it, learn something new and start again.”

Adam Fogelson, chair, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement that Tesfaye is a “visionary whose art cannot be confined by any single medium.” The statement continued, “With ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow,’ in partnership with Trey, his musical universe expands onto the big screen with a psychological thriller that will usher in a new cinematic experience for fans. We are thrilled to be bringing it to audiences worldwide.”

“Hurry Up Tomorrow” premieres May 16 in theaters. Check out the trailer below.
