Chucky star Devon Sawa has weighed in on the future of the Child’s Play franchise following the cancellation of the hit SyFy horror show. Serving as the continuation of the long-running horror franchise that began with 1988’s original Child’s Play movie, many viewers were disappointed to learn that plans for Chucky season 4 had been cancelled in September 2024. Sawa, who played multiple characters throughout the show’s three-season run, quickly became known for assuming a new role in each season, following the death of his previous characters at the hands of the show’s titular killer doll.

During an interview with Forbes, Sawa spoke about the likelihood of the Child’s Play franchise continuing following Chucky’s unexpected cancellation. Confident in the franchise’s enduring popularity and ability to keep selling tie-in merchandise, Sawa suggested that he would “bet the house that you’re going see some more Chucky stuff.” Despite indicating his eagerness to return, the actor also admitted that he has not heard anything directly regarding the franchise’s future, save for there being a behind-the-scenes “changing of the guard” of the property’s producers. Check out his comments below:

If I was in Vegas, I’d bet the house that you’re going see some more Chucky stuff. It sells a lot of t-shirts, cereal, and lunch boxes, so one way or another, we’re getting more Chucky content. Am I going to be in it? I hope so. I have not heard one way or another. I think there’s a changing of the guard as far as producers and whatnot. I don’t know the full story. They don’t tell me a lot. I hope and pray that I go back because it is, along with Final Destination and Idle Hands and the Stan video, one of those projects that I put up on the shelf, and I’m very proud of.

The Child's Play Franchise Was At Its Best In Decades

Before Chucky season 4's cancellation, the beloved horror franchise was experiencing the most critically acclaimed streak of its 36-year history. Dwarfing the critical ratings received by the franchise’s assorted sequels and the 2019 Child’s Play reboot, Chucky season 3 even boasted a perfect 100% fresh critical rating on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Given the overwhelmingly positive response to the franchise’s latest entries, Sawa’s confidence in the return of the Child’s Play franchise seems justified. With other long-running horror IPs, such as the Scream franchise, continuing to draw considerable audience interest decades after their initial launch, there is no reason that Brad Dourif’s killer doll could not make his triumphant return to the big screen. Moreover, a new Child's Play movie would also start out on a much stronger footing than some of the franchise's less popular sequels that were released during the 1990s and early 2000s.

Our Take On Chucky’s Chances Of Returning

History Has Proven That He Always Comes Back

Blood drips on Devon Sawa's face as he fights a man in an elevator in a scene from Chucky season 3

If the Child’s Play franchise has proven anything, it is that Chucky’s reign of terror will never truly be stopped. With franchise creator Don Mancini previously promising fans that not only would Chucky’s story continue, but the various loose threads left by the show’s cancellation would be addressed in one form or another, the doll’s eventual return almost seems like a foregone conclusion, even if the franchise is experiencing behind-the-scenes changes. Hopefully, when that time does come, Sawa will also be given the chance to return as yet another of the fan-favorite doll's ever-growing list of victims.
